Hewlett-Packard plans to open a European financial and accounting service centre in Poland early next year, creating 1,000 jobs in five years, the chief of HP's Polish operations said on Wednesday.

A growing number of foreign investors have been relocating jobs from their western operations to the European Union's new member states to benefit from lower labour costs in the region and investment incentives offered by governments. "We hope to launch a business centre in Poland in spring 2005, which could provide financial and accounting services to HP units from all of Europe as well as to other interested companies," Andrzej Dopierala told Reuters.

"We are holding intensive talks with the Polish government on this investment ... Within five years we will employ 1,000 people in this centre," he added.

The No. 2 computer maker has not yet made a decision on where to build its centre, but local media have reported that potential locations include the western city of Poznan and south-western Wroclaw.

According to a source close to HP, the world's number two computer maker, the cost of the planned investment would reach tens of millions euros.
