Best Practices, LLC's benchmarking report Supply Chain Management Best Practices identifies the systems and programs leading companies use to drive supply chain performance. Information was drawn from primary and secondary research of more than 100 companies.

The following findings emerged from this research:

* Benchmarked companies outsource supply chain functions to save an estimated 10-20% of costs as well as to enable improved customer service. In fact, outsourcing helped a leading automobile manufacturer to reduce its inventories by $1 billion, trim inventory carrying costs by $124 million and decrease delivery times to dealers by 26%.

* Companies that reported 100% delivery performance to commit dates tend to have an extraordinarily tight supply chain -- one that is transparent to sales rep, manufacturer rep or other individual taking the order. Customers can ask about a certain order size and delivery date, and the order management system builds upon the information available on raw material timing, production flow, work in process and finished goods inventory levels -- ensuring that orders will be filled on the date promised.

* One company's collaboration program helped drive a reduction of 40% in WIP and a near-optimum level of finished goods inventory for several product lines. This program, a system from Optiant, also helped drive 90% reduction in production times and 85-90% improvement in delivery performance with no increase in components.
