Although a protest over the awarding of a contract and the pounding Stennis Space Center took from Hurricane Katrina set it back, NASA is moving ahead with its plans to open a Shared Services Center on March 1, 2006 in Mississippi.

The center, which will employ up to 500 people, will consolidate administrative functions for 10 NASA centers. It will handle financial management, human resources, procurement and information technology activities.

The original start up of Oct. 1 was delayed because of a procurement protest, then further delayed by the impact of Hurricane Katrina.

Mississippi is contributing funding for a new 135,000-square-foot building. The pre-Katrina cost was set at $23.7 million. Louisiana is contributing about $1 million for training costs.

The staff will consist of about 150 civil service workers and about 350 employees of Computer Sciences Corp., the service provider.
