HSBC opens $31m call center in Sri Lanka

Banking giant HSBC Tuesday unveiled a $31 million group service center in the Sri Lankan capital Colombo as part of its expansion plans. Sri Lanka was chosen over other contenders, including neighboring India.

"HSBC chose to set up this group service center in Colombo because of the excellent infrastructure available and the quality of the local work force," said Vincent Cheng, HSBC's Asia-Pacific chairman, at the opening ceremony.
 
He said Sri Lanka met the basic requirements for a service center, such as a modern telecommunications infrastructure, and a high level of language and communication skills in the local work force.

HSBC already operates 11 group service centers in five countries.

HSBC chose Sri Lanka despite recent violence from Tamil rebels. Sri Lanka's business process outsourcing (BPO) is worth about $100 million, according to a survey conducted by the local Information Communication and Technology Agency (ICTA). For Sri Lanka, much of the outsourcing business is from Europe, Scandinavia and Australia.
