The recruitment and selection of shared services staff is probably one of the most critical tasks anyone can undertake. Shared-service unit leaders need to have 'general management' skills as a priority. After all, they are responsible for running a service business, even if it is internal to the organization. They need to build strong relationships with internal (and, in some cases, external) clients, while creating and maintaining a positive environment for achievement within the unit itself. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills are, therefore, essential and take priority over functional expertise.
